Renowned as Australia’s premier cross-country ski resort, Lake Mountain has much to offer visitors year-round. Discover the beauty of its alpine environment in winter or summer, on trails that wind through snow gum woodland.
For several months of the year, Lake Mountain plateau (undulating between 1330–1490 metres) is blanketed in snow, creating Australia’s premier cross-country ski resort.
In spring 40 kilometres of well-marked ski trails become popular walking tracks, and challenging mountain bike rides. The diversity of flora is revealed in subtle and stunning wildflower displays that last into summer. Explore this beautiful alpine environment and marvel at the stunning snow gum woodland coloured with bright wildflowers.
Only two hours from Melbourne, Lake Mountain is a great escape from the summer heat of the city, as well as a great place to discover an alpine environment. The road from Marysville takes you through mountain ash forests and rainforest gullies. As you approach Gerraty’s car park, the tall forests give way to subalpine plant communities such as snow gums and significant areas of subalpine heath and bogs, all designed to withstand the effects of high altitude and extreme weather conditions.
There are many scenic lookouts offering panoramic views of the Victorian Alps to the east, Melbourne and the surrounding foothills of the Great Dividing Range to the west.
