Metung

Metung, Gippsland

Metung is a picture-book village, three and a half hours' drive east of Melbourne. A tiny town, stretching along a narrow sandy peninsula in the Gippsland Lakes, Metung offers kilometres of water to explore, fine food, wine and sculpture. Collect the keys to your holiday house or apartment, and take a pleasant walk along the water's edge to the Metung Hotel. A rest on the hotel's green lawns, as historic sailing boats glide by, is a local sunset tradition.

Boating
Boat lovers and summer waterskiers are drawn to Metung's relaxed village lifestyle. Take a cruise and glimpse birdlife and kangaroos grazing by the water. Small runabouts are also available for hire.

Fishing
Metung and surrounds offer excellent fishing. Try your hand at hooking bream, tailor, flathead, King George whiting and prawns in summer.

Eat out
Head to a harbourside restaurant for quality local seafood and wine. Pick an excellent restaurant for a fancy meal or find a sunny spot opposite the village green, for a relaxed lunch and great coffee.

Contemporary art
Metung's natural beauty attracts many artists. Visit farm studios, gardens and galleries to view locally crafted pieces by Kate Shone, Max Nicholson and Daniel Jenkins.
