Buses in Melbourne

Melbourne bus

Melbourne's bus network is made up of over 300 routes. Buses run frequently to major hubs, including shopping centres, schools, hospitals, leisure and sporting activities, and Melbourne’s biggest attractions.

Tickets
Metropolitan Melbourne is divided into two zones, with fares based on time and distance.  While it's best to pre-purchase your ticket before travelling, a limited range of tickets (called Metcards) can be purchased on board from the driver.

Metcards can also be purchased on Metlink's website, at Premium Stations or retail outlets displaying the blue Metcard sign, or via the Metcard Helpline on 1800 652 313. A valid Metcard allows you to travel on all of Melbourne’s trains, trams and buses.

After midnight
NightRider buses travel from the city to the suburbs in the early hours, departing Swanston Street (between Collins and Flinders streets) every 30 minutes from 1.30am – 4.30am on Saturday and between 1.30am and 5.30am on Sunday. Normal Metcard fares apply. A 2 hour Metcard validated after 6pm can be used until 3am.

NightRider operate low-floor wheelchair accessible buses with stepless entry. You should call ahead to confirm low-floor buses.

On board public phones are available so you can call a taxi or a friend to collect you from the bus stop. For more NightRider information, timetables and route maps visit the Metlink website.
