Federation Square

Federation Square is Melbourne's striking city square, on the edge of the Yarra River and across the road from Flinders Street Station. The size of an entire city block, the Square brings together a creative mix of attractions including leading-edge galleries, cinemas, award-winning restaurants, cafés and bars, events and festivals and grand public open spaces embraced by some of the most unique and striking architecture in the world.

The Square's cultural attractions are supported by some of the best restaurants, cafés and bars in Melbourne. Offering visitors a range of styles from FunkFish (a casual fish and chippery) to Taxi (fine dining with a Japanese twist).

Federation Square's unique position, nature and design is makes it a 'must see' destination of Victoria. It is also the logical point from which visitors begin their exploration of all that Melbourne has to offer.

How to get there
By tram: Any tram along Swanston Street and St Kilda Road to stops at Federation Square, the Arts Centre and NGV International and the Victorian College of the Arts; the free City Circle Tram to the corner of Flinders and Swanston streets; Number 1 (South Melbourne) for Melbourne Theatre Company, Melbourne Recital Centre, ACCA and the Malthouse Theatre.

Free Melbourne City Tourist Shuttle: Stop 1. The complete trip includes 13 stops and takes approximately an hour and a half. The bus runs every 30 minutes between 9.30am and 4.30pm daily (excluding Good Friday and Christmas Day) and includes an on-board commentary.

By train: To Flinders Street Station.

Accessibility

The Square rises from street level at a significant gradient and is paved with small uneven cobblestones of variegated, coloured Kimberley sandstone. The surface is difficult to navigate and doesn't offer any visual contrast at changes of level. An access map is under development and will be downloadable from www.melbourne.vic.gov.au.
Accessible car spaces are provided in the car park with lift access to the square.

The Ian Potter Centre - NGV Australia
Grab a copy of What's on at NGV which contains a good map of the galleries and identifies the location of the accessible toilets, café and shop. Access is provided by hearing loop in the Auditorium and Theatre, signage includes Braille and seeing eye dogs are welcome. Audio tours and personalised tours, including Auslan interpreters, can be arranged.

Australian Centre for the Moving Image (ACMI)
Lifts convey patrons to the cinemas and wheelchair seating has been provided. Accessible toilets are available. Hearing loops have been installed in each cinema.
