Some lunchtimes what you really crave is mental stimulation. So bypass the food-court and head to the Melbourne Athenaeum Library. Established in 1839, it’s one of the state’s oldest public institutions and was a vital role in disseminating knowledge during Victoria’s early years. Today the library has a strong leisure focus with a large collection of classic and current fiction titles plus non-fiction genres such as travel and history. Members pay an annual subscription fee according to the level of access they require. More like a book club than a library, the Athenaeum aims to satisfy the appetites of its voracious readers.
