| Anada is an unusually slick addition to the casual cafe district of Gertrude Street in Fiztroy. The dining space is clean and cosy with classic table settings and the intimate glow of tea lights, but it is also small so this little eatery packs out quickly. Chef and co-owner Jesse Gerner gained experience at Melbourne's renowned tapas haven, MoVida, before perfecting the tapas tradition in Spain and at London's Moorish mecca, Moro. Some of the tantalising tapas options will be familiar to Melburnians who've been reared on the traditional tastes of MoVida, with dishes including queso manchego with membrillo (thinly sliced Spanish sheep's milk cheese with quince paste). However, the seafood-dominated raciones menu experiments a little with traditional favourites, including Galician octopus with potato and paprika; chargrilled prawns with salmorejo and pancetta; and the signature mackerel, chargrilled in vine leaves with orange blossom and pistachio sauce. Vegetarians won't go hungry with such tapas as organic tomatoes marinated in 25-year-old sherry vinegar and mint; and aubergine and tomato pilaf topped with dill and yoghurt.
Desserts again take the tastebuds on an adventurous tour with slow-roasted peaches with labneh; and pomegranate and orange blossom sorbet with sugared pistachios. |
